Heavy rains flood local school

4/17/2019 (Permalink)

Spring rain season is here and is in full force.

SERVPRO of Plano technician's were contacted from a middle school in our area.

Major rains caused the water to rise and come up through a pipe and disperse muddy water throughout the school. Many classrooms and halls were saturated in a muddy residue from the rising water.

Our crews spend several hours extracting several inches the muddy water throughout the building for several hours and finally reached the point of pulling cove base and setting the drying equipment.

The school was allowed to reopen the very next day.

Rain Storms in Texas

2/14/2019 (Permalink)

Storms in North Texas can pop up at any time mostly when you least expect them.  When the storms hit and it rains for days or rains a lot in a few hours run off is the main concern.

Run off can cause immediate flooding which can intrude your home or business. Water will usually enter through the foundation or windows and doors. When this occurs the water is now considered dirty water due  to the fact that there is unknown contaminants in the water. If this water intrudes your home or business all of the flooring and contents would need to be disposed of due to containimation.

SERVPRO of Plano has the experienced Technicians to walk you through this type of disaster. Our crews are IICRC and ADS trained and certified.

Winter Storms

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

Storms during the winter can cause major damage to your home and your personal belongings.

The main damage caused by winter storms is frozen pipes.  When frozen pipes occur most of the time it is unseen damage until the water saturates the drywall material.  When the water comes out of the pipes the damage can be very extensive to all of the building material and to your personal belongings.

Your first call should be to SERVPRO of Plano.  Our technicians will arrive onsite go over our procedure with you and immediately start the extraction of the water. The carpet is extracted the pad is pulled out and the carpet is then dried in place.  Sometimes depending on the severity of the water damage we might need to expedite the drying process by pulling baseboards and drilling small holes to further the airflow.

Do you think that you are Storm ready?

1/9/2018 (Permalink)

Each year Storms can hit all over the United States you must be STORM Ready.

Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, winddriven snow that lasts for several days.

Some winter storms are large enough to affect several states, while others affect only a single community.

Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

Here are some tips to stay warm:

 * Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing, wear mittens and a hat (preferably one that covers your ears).

* Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow.

* Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.

* Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS).

* Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing.

* Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.

*Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year.

*Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.

*Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.

* All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear. Cold-Related Emergencies

* Frostbite and hypothermia are two dangerous and potentially life-threatening emergencies. Learn how to care for these emergencies by taking a first aid class.

* Go to a designated public shelter if your home loses power or heat during periods of extreme cold.

* Avoid driving when conditions include sleet, freezing rain or drizzle, snow or dense fog. *

Before tackling strenuous tasks in cold temperatures, consider your physical condition, the weather factors and the nature of the task. * Protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in several layers. Stay indoors, if possible.

* Help people who require special assistance such as elderly people living alone, people with disabilities and children.

* Check on your animals and make sure that their access to food and water is not blocked by snow drifts, ice or other obstacles. If possible, bring them indoors. Caution: Carbon Monoxide Kills * Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. Locate unit away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors.

* The primary hazards to avoid when using alternate sources for electricity, heating or cooking are carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire.

* Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

* If the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door.

* Call for help from the fresh air location and remain there until emergency personnel arrive to assist you.

Being Prepared for Tsunamis

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

BE PREPARED:

Coastal States

Tsunamis Why take the risk?

Did you know tsunamis can hit any U.S. coast? While they are more likely to hit states on the Pacific coastline or in the Caribbean, it is good to know what to do if a tsunami does strike where you live, or even where you may vacation. Ready.gov says “tsunamis, also known as seismic sea waves (mistakenly called “tidal waves”), are a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance such as an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or meteorite.” Areas within a mile of the coast and less than 25 feet above sea level have a greater risk of being hit. As with any emergency, be sure you have a plan.

Know the evacuation plan and move inland or to higher ground and avoid the beach. “The first wave may not be the last or the largest,” according to the National Weather Service. For more information on preparing for a tsunami, visit ready.gov/tsunamis.

Are You Storm Smart and Storm Ready

Storm Damage Are You Storm Smart and Storm Ready Severe Weather Lightning Strike

In 2013, there were seven weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States.

These events included five severe weather and tornado events, a major flood event, and the western drought/heat wave.  Overall, these events killed 109 people and had significant economic effects on the areas impacted.

Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

Know Your Risk: The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather can impact your business and your family.

Take Action: Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business.

Be an Example: Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Face book or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.
