Rain Storms in Texas

2/14/2019 (Permalink)

Storms in North Texas can pop up at any time mostly when you least expect them.  When the storms hit and it rains for days or rains a lot in a few hours run off is the main concern.

Run off can cause immediate flooding which can intrude your home or business. Water will usually enter through the foundation or windows and doors. When this occurs the water is now considered dirty water due  to the fact that there is unknown contaminants in the water. If this water intrudes your home or business all of the flooring and contents would need to be disposed of due to containimation.

SERVPRO of Plano has the experienced Technicians to walk you through this type of disaster. Our crews are IICRC and ADS trained and certified.

Water Damage to Local Hair Salon

2/14/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plano was contacted by the property manager of this large strip center on Sunday morning. The employees had arrived to work, opened the door and were standing in about an inch to two inches of water throughout their salon.

Water from the hot water heater had leaked out overnight and had saturated most all of the hair salon rooms. Multiple types of flooring was involved as well.

Our technicians arrived onsite in an hour and started the extraction process. After the standing water was extracted, baseboards were removed to expedite the drying process.  Then all of the air movers and dehumidifiers were placed throughout the building. This was a commercial property that had commercial carpeting as well with no pad under it.

The property is drying to standards and soon they will have the baseboards reattached and the carpet cleaned.

If you happen to go to work and find yourself in this type of situation, please contact SERVPRO of Plano at 972-403-9004.

Winter Storms

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

Storms during the winter can cause major damage to your home and your personal belongings.

The main damage caused by winter storms is frozen pipes.  When frozen pipes occur most of the time it is unseen damage until the water saturates the drywall material.  When the water comes out of the pipes the damage can be very extensive to all of the building material and to your personal belongings.

Your first call should be to SERVPRO of Plano.  Our technicians will arrive onsite go over our procedure with you and immediately start the extraction of the water. The carpet is extracted the pad is pulled out and the carpet is then dried in place.  Sometimes depending on the severity of the water damage we might need to expedite the drying process by pulling baseboards and drilling small holes to further the airflow.

“Mold Removal” vs. Mold Remediation

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

The Mold Remediation Process

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same.

  1. Emergency Contact - (972)403-9004
  2. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
  3. Mold Containment
  4. Air Filtration
  5. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
  6. Cleaning Contents and Belongings

Three Reasons Not to Wait for an Adjuster to Visit Before Restoring Your Property

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

3 Reasons Not to Wait for an Adjuster to Visit Before Restoring Your Home

After your home in Plano, Texas, has sustained water damage due to a flood, flood insurance often requires an adjuster to come to your home to assess the damage that has been done. However, waiting to restore your home until after an adjuster to come to your home after a STORM is often not necessary for several reasons.

1. Adjusters Are Busy

Once a natural disaster has occurred, insurance companies immediately begin to work with their customers to help them restore their homes. However, the demand for an adjuster to visit homes can mean you’ll be waiting to see an adjuster. Waiting to begin making major fixes to your home isn’t necessary, and you can document the damage that has been done by taking photographs and saving receipts.

2. You Won’t Lose Money Cleaning Up

Although you might be tempted to leave your home exactly as it is after it has sustained FLOOD damage, you will not receive less compensation if you start the cleanup process quickly. It is likely that you will want or need certain items removed from your home before your flood insurance company sends an adjuster to visit your home, and this is okay. Documenting the cleanup process can help to ensure you are fairly compensated for your losses.

3. Your Home Could Become More Damaged

Minor issues in your home can quickly become major issues if they are not fixed in a timely manner. Structural damage, mold damage and more can occur if your home is not dried out and if standing water is not removed. In order to save yourself from having to spend more money, time and effort in restoring your home, it’s often wise to start the restoration process quickly.

Knowing that you do not have to wait for your flood insurance company to send an adjuster to your home before beginning the restoration process might help you save money and protect your home. As you start the restoration process, many people find it helpful to work with professionals in water damage cleanup and restoration.

Understanding Mold

Understanding Mold

Some restoration companies advertise “mold removal” and may even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy because removing all mold from a house or business is impossible; microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. Here are the facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Do I have MOLD Damage in my Plano Home?

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

We Are The Best At Identifying Mold And Restoring Your Dallas Home

SERVPRO of Plano provides fast and cost-effective mold remediation care for homeowners across the local area.

There are numerous species of fungi that cause mold damage in Plano and elsewhere across the United States, each with a different growth pattern and biological structure than its relatives. Identifying mold damage in your home may not always be a clear-cut task, as some types of mold may not fit the standard bill of a green, fuzzy patch that slowly expands outward. Here are some tips SERVPRO inspectors have learned over the years that might help you identify a colony before it gets out of hand.

Look For Discoloration Of Any Kind
Not all Mold damage in Plano is green. Some types of mold are black, brown, white, yellow, or even something else entirely. However, you should still be able to identify color differences between the fungus and whatever it has started to grow on if you look close enough. If the wall is painted green but a small section appears to be off-color, use a magnifying glass or look closer to see if that patch has any unusual textures. Be careful not to touch any part of your home that you suspect has mold growing on it.

Watch For Polka Dots
Many types of mold appear as “polka dots” across a surface, as small patches develop in multiple areas at once. This can be a critical point in time to call in SERVPRO, as without fast action, these patches can grow and spread outward to become one massive colony. Look for these polka dots on clothing and other objects nearby, as they may also be affected.

Use Your Nose
While most colonies can only be smelled once they reach a significant size, some species of mold may produce strong odors even in their infancy. Look out for musty or foul odors in any area that you suspect could be harboring mold growth.

SERVPRO of Plano provides fast and cost-effective mold remediation care for homeowners across the local area. Call SERVPRO as soon as you identify a problem at (972) 403-9004.

Celebrate Safely This Holiday Season and Be Prepared!

Celebrate Safely This Holiday Season

Pretty lights, candles and decorations are just a few of the items bringing charm and cheer to the holiday season—however, if they are not used carefully your holidays may go from festive to frightening. The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips to help greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season. Place Christmas trees, candles and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents and candles. Make sure light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the property or going to bed. Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed. Use only sturdy tree stands designed not to tip over. Keep curious pets and children away from Christmas trees.Keep anything that can catch fire—pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging and towels or curtains—away from your stove top. Designate one person to walk around your property to ensure all candles and smoking materials are properly extinguished after guests leave. SERVPRO of Plano and staff wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

National Influenza Vaccination Week Is this week

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

Why take the risk? Call SERVPRO of Plano Working to make it “Like it never even happened.” Starting in 2005, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) established the National Influenza Vaccination week “to highlight the importance of continuing flu vaccination through the holiday season and beyond.” In 2018, by the end of November only about 41% of the recommended US population had been vaccinated. If you’ve already gotten the flu, you can still get vaccinated to protect you against other strands of the flu, according to the CDC. People with high risk of complications from the flu include young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions and people over the age of 65, and should get vaccinated. Although anyone is at risk of getting the flu, for high-risk people, hospitalization or death is more likely than for others. According to the CDC, “flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits and missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations.” Get a flu shot today to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Do you Think FIREWORKS Landing on your roof could cause a FIRE?

7/5/2018 (Permalink)

It has happened plenty of times... especially when there is debris in the gutters, like dried leaves and twigs. Just because it is an asphalt roof shingle, doesn't mean it won't catch fire... just think... what is asphalt? It is a petroleum based product, on a hot roof, and if it then comes in contact with sparks from a firework, you potentially have a problem.Fireworks were also banned in central Texas this year due to the extremely dry/drought conditions. 72% of Texas is in the highest drought category this year.... whew! Most of the area cities also cancelled their public firework displays due to the extreme fire danger. If a FIRE strikes your home call the professionals SERVPRO of Plano 972-403-9004.

EXTREME HEAT

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

As summer approaches, it is time to consider safety precautions for extreme heat in the coming months. Heat affects all people, but especially the young, elderly, sick, and overweight. Urban area residents also have a greater chance of being affected than those who live in rural areas due to the heat island effect. According to the EPA, “the sun can heat dry, exposed urban surfaces, such as roofs and pavement, to temperatures 50–90°F hotter than the air, while shaded or moist surfaces—often in more rural surroundings—remain close to air temperatures.” These surface heat islands are strongest during the day when the sun is shining, while the atmospheric heat islands are more likely after sunset “due to the slow release of heat from urban infrastructure.” Whether you are in an urban or rural area, there are several things you can do to prepare for and prevent extreme heat from affecting you. If possible, stay indoors in air conditioning. Be sure to check on your pets who may be outdoors or bring them inside. Stay hydrated and limit alcohol and caffeine intake. If you must go outside, wear loosefitting, light-colored clothing, and be sure to apply sunscreen often. Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, which are heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale, and clammy skin; nausea or vomiting; and fainting, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which is lifethreatening. Signs of heat stroke are a high body temperature (103°+), rapid and strong pulse, and possible unconsciousness. If you think someone has heat stroke, call 911 immediately and move the person somewhere cool. Reduce body temperature with cool, wet cloths or a bath. Do not give a person with heat stroke fluids, and treat the situation as a serious medical emergency (CDC). If you live in a humid climate, be aware of the heat index. The heat index factors in the humidity, which can make the temperature feel 15° hotter. Extreme heat is a serious danger. For more information on preparation and prevention, visit ready.gov or cdc.gov.

CARBON MONOXIDE: A Silent Killer

6/19/2018 (Permalink)

CARBON MONOXIDE:A Silent Killer You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels, it can killa person in minutes. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide, or CO,is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas, created when fuels, like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas and propane burn incompletely.According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning. It is estimated another 20,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 4,000are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning, with some groups—including unborn babies, infants, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems—being more susceptible to the effects of carbon monoxide. An excess of CO, leading to CO poisoning, can result from faulty furnaces or other heating appliances, portable generators, water heaters, clothes dryers, or idling cars left running in garages.Taking some basic, precautionary steps can help eliminate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Protect yourself by reviewing the following tips, provided by the United States Fire Administration. Have fuel-burning appliances, like oil and gas furnaces, gas or kerosene heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves inspected by a trained professional every year. Open the damper for proper ventilation before using a fireplace.Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home. Make sure all fuel-burning vented equipment is vented to the outside to avoid CO poisoning. Keep the venting for exhaust clear and unblocked. If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Never run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not blocked with snow, ice, or other materials. Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow and other debris. Only use barbecue grills outside, away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings. Some grills can produce CO gas.Never use grills inside the home or the garage, even if the doors are open. Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the home.

To HOT to handle?

6/18/2018 (Permalink)

On June 21, we can all sit back, enjoy the longest day of sunlight in 2018, and officially welcome in summer! So what can we do to help our lawns survive in the 100+ degree weather that is sure to come our way and still stay WaterWise?  We are so glad you asked!

Plant Right. Some grasses do better than others in our heat. The best options for our area are Bermuda, Zoysia, and Buffalo. They also have the advantage of being able to develop a deep root structure which is important to developing a drought resistant lawn.

Go Blonde! Really. When it gets hot out, plants naturally slow their growth in order to conserve moisture. This means that your grass will “blonde” during the peak of heat. This is natural and does not harm your lawn.

Forget the Fertilizer. Putting fertilizer on a blond lawn in order to green it up will encourage your grass to grow. But doing so, will make it thirsty. This will put stress on your lawn’s root system and cause your water bill to soar with the high temperatures.

Mow Higher. Once your grass goes blonde, its growth has slowed and leaving it a little taller may even help it to stay greener a little longer during hot spells, as your grass can spend more energy on expanding its root system (making it more drought tolerant) instead of trying to recover from a short cut.

Most of all, remember to take care of any yard work early in the day to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. Come up with a plan the night before, get organized, and stick to your plan, and finish quickly.

While no one looks forward to the days when temperatures soar above 100 degrees, with a little planning and a little understanding, we can all reach the other side with our lawns intact and a sense of accomplishment for staying WaterWise.

National Flag Day

U.S. Flag Day
Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The United States Army also celebrates the U.S. Army Birthdays on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1946, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Title 36 of the United States Code, Subtitle I, Part A, CHAPTER 1, 110[4] is the official statute on Flag Day; however, it is at the president's discretion to officially proclaim the observance. On June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first U.S. state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday, beginning in the town of Rennerdale. New York Statutes designate the second Sunday in June as Flag Day, a state holiday.

Perhaps the oldest continuing Flag Day parade is in Fairfield, Washington. Beginning in 1909 or 1910, Fairfield has held a parade every year since, with the possible exception of 1918, and celebrated the "Centennial" parade in 2010, along with some other commemorative events. Appleton, Wisconsin, claims to be the oldest National Flag Day parade in the nation, held annually since 1950.

It may seem early, but hurricane season is currently underway. For the Atlantic, the season begins June 1 and runs through November 30. Making a Difference in our Community

5/7/2018 (Permalink)

The Plano Chamber Ambassadors recently embraced a service project to assist one of our Chamber nonprofit members in need. Heritage Farmstead Museum, the premiere living history site interpreting the Texas Blackland Prairie region in North Texas, submitted a service project to Leadership Plano (LP) Class 35 requesting assistance with updates to their property. LP ultimately selected a different class project, so our Ambassador leadership team willingly stepped up to the plate to lend a helping hand.Over 25 Ambassadors and LP class members arrived to complete the updates, which included sanding, painting, landscaping, and other organizational tasks. We even had some future Ambassadors join us to contribute their helping hands.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

5/7/2018 (Permalink)

With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. By raising awareness of the dangers of unprotected exposure and encouraging sun-safe habits such as using sun block, we can change behaviors and save lives.

With the incidence of this disease reaching epidemic levels, we can’t do this work alone. We need your help. we need you and your family members to take the time to go to your doctor and get your skin checked out.

International Firefighters Day

5/4/2018 (Permalink)

THANK YOU for your SERVICE! INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTER'S DAY.On December 2, 1998, a tragic event shook the Linton Community, Australia and the world. Firefighters in Linton, Australia- a populated region in Victoria- were fighting a large bush fire and called for mutual aid. This urgent mutual aid call brought the Geelong West Fire Brigade to the scene not knowing the despair and tragedy that was in store. Garry Vredeveldt, Chris Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong all loaded into company’s truck. They were part of a strike team and were being sent to help extinguish the flames. As the five headed into the hot zone, the wind suddenly switched direction, engulfing the truck in flames and killing all five members. This unfortunate incident is what inspired JJ Edmondson to bring about an international holiday, called International Fire Fighters Day, to support the lives lost and dedicated fire fighters who risk their lives every day to save life and property. One of the most significant symbols of International Fire Fighters Day is the red and blue ribbon. This ribbon is cut precisely five centimeters long and one centimeter wide, with the two separate colors conjoined at the top. JJ Edmonson chose red and blue because the red stood for the element of fire whereas the blue would represent the element of water. Coincidentally, red and blue are also the colors recognized world-wide to signify emergency services; therefore, red and blue being the best choice of color to recognize an international holiday. The ribbon is traditionally worn on the lapel-otherwise known as the fold of fabric on a shirt- but is not limited to that certain spot. Some people may also put it on their cars visors, hats, hang them in windows or off of car mirrors, or even hang them from trees in their front lawn. The places this ribbon can be placed are plentiful- just be creative! The red and blue ribbon is a simple but yet effective way to show support for International Fire Fighters Day.

Flooding

5/3/2018 (Permalink)

According to the National Weather Service (NOAA),

"Approximately seventy-five percent of all Presidential disaster declarations are associated with flooding". NOAA lists the most common flood hazards in the United States as:

Flash Flooding

River Flooding

Storm Surge and Coastal

Inundation from Tropical and Non Tropical Systems

Burn Scars/Debris Flaws (caused by Wildfires)

Ice/Debris Jams

Snowmelt

DryWash (caused by heavy rainfall in dry areas)

Dam Breaks/Levee Failure

Just because you haven't experienced a flood doesn't mean you won't in the future. In fact 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. On average, flood cost $3.5 billion in annual losses in the United States.

When catastrophic water damage happens to you, SERVPRO of Plano is here to help. We can help you prepare ahead of time with an Emergancy Ready Profile (ERP) .

Bio hazard Cleaning

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plano understands How to mitigate this type of situation. Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them.

A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs. Hoarding often creates such cramped living conditions that homes may be filled to capacity, with only narrow pathways winding through stacks of clutter. Counter tops, sinks, stoves, desks, stairways and virtually all other surfaces are usually piled with stuff. And when there's no more room inside, the clutter may spread to the garage, vehicles, yard and other storage facilities.

Hoarding ranges from mild to severe. In some cases, hoarding may not have much impact on your life, while in other cases it seriously affects your functioning on a daily basis.

People with hoarding disorder may not see it as a problem, making treatment challenging. But intensive treatment can help people with hoarding disorder understand how their beliefs and behaviors can be changed so that they can live safer, more enjoyable lives.

Please contact SERVPRO of Plano (972)403-9004 today to let us help walk you through this situation.

Our crews are very sensitive to each situation.

Electrical Fire in Wall Outlet in Apartment

Electrical Fire

SERVPRO of Plano was called upon to help with an electrical fire loss in an apartment wall.

This is just what can happen when a fire starts in an electrical outlet.

Your electrical wall outlet can become to hot and overheat. Some plugs on your items may be frayed or become to hot while plugged into the outlet causing the cord to overheat and the plastic to start to melt/burn.  If the homeowner is not at home when this occurs it could be tragic. In order for this type of loss not to occur we suggest that you check your items that are plugged in to the wall often.

SERVPRO of Plano is in the process of cleaning and deodorizing all contents back to normal.

Please be safe and call SERVPRO of Plano at (972)403-9004 if you should experience this type of loss.

We provide free estimates during business hours.

Are your Ducts Dirty?

4/16/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know your ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality?

In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

A routine part of your local SERVPRO of Plano Professional’s service is inspecting the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life-span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may help save you money.

Duct cleaning may not always be necessary. In some circumstances, such as after a fire, smoke, or suspected mold growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the cleanup process. In these cases, SERVPRO of Plano can often restore the HVAC system and ductwork to pre-damage condition. If you have a fuel-burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends they be inspected for proper functioning and be serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

The SERVPRO Duct Cleaning System is proven and cost-efficient. Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, your SERVPRO of Plano uses a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime. n The process begins by using patented equipment, including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct’s shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins. n Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16-gallon container. n Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of the particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.

As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns. n Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

For more information on duct cleaning, or to schedule an appointment, contact  SERVPRO of Plano today. 972-403-9004

Hoarding: A Serious Situation

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

According to The Mayo Clinic, “Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs.” Many people with hoarding disorder do not find their habits to be a problem. Hoarded items are often things others would throw away or look at as junk or garbage such as old newspapers, junk mail or packaging. Hoarding can lead to homes filled with extreme clutter to full capacity from years of accumulation, making living conditions unsanitary and crowded. Bugs, fleas, rats and other vermin may be present, at which point an exterminator would need to be called. At times, hoarding may spread to outside the home as well, to storage facilities, or even the garage or yard. SERVPRO of Plano encounter hoarding situations several different ways. Often, a SERVPRO of Plano is called for a fire or water loss and find the hoarding situation when they arrive on-site. A SERVPRO Plano will communicate with the insurance company regarding their contents coverage, and after approval, contents can be packed out and possibly cleaned, dried, and stored by the SERVPRO of Plano, or relocated to a storage facility so work on the fire or water loss can begin. Another way SERVPRO of Plano encounter hoarding jobs is through calls from landlords, case workers, real estate agents, or family members, often after the death of a loved one. In these situations, the crew will see if they should look for any items of importance while they clean the job. Sometimes, family members will come and try to help the hoarder sort through their contents as well. Each case is very different, and hoarding jobs are often sensitive situations, but SERVPRO® of Plano Professionals are here to help make it “Like it never even happened.” If you encounter a hoarding situation at one of your properties, or with your insureds, call:

SERVPRO of Plano has the experienced crews to help walk you through this serious situation.

THE SCIENCE OF DRYING AFTER A WATER DAMAGE

2/26/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plano is here for you.

Drying a property after a water damage needs to be done correctly and quickly.  SERVPRO of Plano technicians are trained in the science of psychrometrics and follow strict industry-approved standards to ensure secondary water damage is minimized.

Psychrometry is the calculation of relative humidity and water-vapor pressures from temperature and barometric pressure. It’s also called hygrometry.

If your home or business has a water damage, we will:

  • Inspect your property to detect any wet materials.
  • Measure the amount of moisture in the wet materials.
  • Set up professional drying equipment.
  • Monitor wet materials every day to ensure they dry properly and quickly.

Why Drying Quickly is Important

Materials can often dry on their own if the moisture if the moisture in the wet material moves to drier air (assuming there is drier air).  The problem with letting nature take care of drying your property is that it simply takes too long and the chances for secondary damage become high.  This is the reason we use professional drying equipment, such as air movers, dehumidifiers, and other specialty equipment, to help speed up nature.  Our technicians know the right amount of equipment and its most efficient placement to dry your structure.

How We Monitor the Drying Process

We will visit your property every day to check the drying status of all wet components.  We use a start-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process to help the speed of drying.  As areas become dry, we remove equipment.

DryBook

We document all drying data into a proprietary program called DryBook.  This is how we:

  • Manage industry drying requirements.
  • Provide real-time documentation of the drying process.  This documentation is given to your insurance provider, should you file a claim.
  • Validate services are executed to standard.
  • Report to all stakeholders involved.
  • Allow real-time updates.

Our technicians have the training and equipment to make it “Like it never even happened.”  We’re ready to help.

National Chili Day

2/22/2018 (Permalink)

Chili & The President
U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson was a big chili lover. His favorite recipe became known as Pedernales River chili after the location of his Texas ranch. Johnson preferred venison, which is leaner to beef, probably due to doctor’s orders about his bad heart. Lady Bird Johnson, the First lady, had the recipe printed on cards to be mailed out because of the many thousands of requests the White House received for it.

"Chili concocted outside of Texas is usually a weak, apologetic imitation of the real thing,” Johnson is quoted as saying. “One of the first things I do when I get home to Texas is to have a bowl of red. There is simply nothing better.”

In 1977, chili manufacturers in the state of Texas successfully lobbied the state legislature to have chili proclaimed the official "state food" of Texas “in recognition of the fact that the only real 'bowl of red' is that prepared by Texans.”

National Sticky Bun Day

NATIONAL STICKY BUN DAY

National Sticky Bun Day is observed annually on February 21st.

Originally known as “schnecken” and still considered to be a Philadelphia specialty, it is believed that the sticky bun’s origin in the United States began in the 18th century when the German settlers brought baking tradition with them when they began settling near Pennsylvania.

Most often served for breakfast or as a dessert, sticky buns consist of rolled pieces of leavened dough that often contain brown sugar and sometimes cinnamon.  Before the dough is placed in the pan, the pan is lined with sticky sweet ingredients such as maple syrup, honey, nuts, sugar and butter.  When the buns are finished baking, they are then flipped upside down so that the sticky bottom becomes the topping.

President's Day

2/19/2018 (Permalink)

Presidents' Day in the United States

Washington's Birthday, also known as Presidents' Day, is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of February. The day honors presidents of the United States, including George Washington, the USA's first president.

What Do People Do?

Washington's Birthday officially honors the life and work of George Washington, the first president of the United States. The day commemorates past presidents of the USA. Washington's Birthday is sometimes known as Presidents' Day. This is because while most states have adopted Washington's Birthday, some states officially celebrate Presidents' Day.

Some states pay particular attention to Abraham Lincoln, as his birthday was also in mid-February. In the weeks or days leading up to the holiday, schools often organize events and lessons for students about the presidents of the United States and George Washington in particular. It is a popular day for stores to start their sales.

The US federal holiday is on the third Monday of February each year, but records show that George Washington's birthday is on February 22.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINEThe history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Did You Know?Approximately 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Happy FAT TUESDAY

2/13/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plano loves to celebrate Fat Tuesday!

Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. It is also known as Mardi Gras Day or Shrove Day. It is a day when people eat all they want of everything and anything they want as the following day is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of a long fasting period for Christians.

Related popular practices are associated with Shrovetide celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent. In countries such as the United Kingdom, Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove Tuesday, which is derived from the word shrive, meaning "confess".

Mardi Gras and Carnival are the same celebration. Though Mardi Gras technically refers only to Fat Tuesday, the Mardi Gras season actually begins on Epiphany, a Christian holiday celebrated on January 6 that is otherwise known as Three Kings Day or the Twelfth Day of Christmas.

National Boy Scouts Day

2/8/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plano is privileged to honor our local scouts troops.

NATIONAL BOY SCOUTS DAY

Since 1910, boys across America have been doing good deeds, learning survival skills and developing moral foundations through the Boy Scout of America.  February 8th annually recognizes National Boys Scouts Day.

The Boy Scouts of America has roots in the British Boy Scouts organization which was created in 1908 after the success of the book Scouting for Boys by Robert Baden-Powell.

On a foggy day in London an American newspaperman, William Dickson Boyce, became lost when a Boy Scout came to his assistance. With the boy’s guidance, Boyce arrived at his destination. When Boyce offered payment for the assistance, the Boy Scout refused explaining it was a good deed.

Boyce was inspired to organize similar youth groups into one organization. On February 8, 1910, Boyce filed papers of incorporation, and the Boy Scouts of America was born.

Boy Scouts have had a profound impact on the United States.  Many presidents and other dignitaries have been Boy Scouts.  A total of 181 Astronauts have also been a part of the Boy Scout program.

What is National Umbrella Day?

2/7/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plano celebrates National umbrella day.

Dolly Parton once said that if you want the rainbow, you’ve got to put up with the rain. Although she never said anything about how to put up with the rain, for generations, the method-of-choice has been the umbrella. As part of many cultures since ancient times, umbrellas have a storied history worth commemorating. So on February 10, we celebrate National Umbrella Day!

Why We Love National Umbrella Day

A. There are dozens of varieties
From the classic to automatic, and from collapsible to comical, there are dozens of types of umbrellas for countless types of scenarios. Which is your go-to?

B. They're still seeing innovation
If you search for "umbrellas" on any number of crowdfunding websites, you might be surprised by what you find — there are some seriously strange umbrella innovations happening out there. There aren't many things that have been around for so long, and are still seeing innovation!

C. They've got history
From the scrawlings of ancient Rome, to China, and to Greece, umbrellas can be spotted in the artwork of many early civilizations. It's one of the many examples of a tool that was invented multiple times, in multiple places, as the need for it was so universal.

How to Celebrate National Umbrella Day

1. Watch a movie that features an umbrella
Singin' in the Rain? Mary Poppins? There are dozens of movies with umbrellas prominently featured, and today's the perfect day to watch one!

2. Get a cocktail with its own umbrella
Can anyone say "Mai Tai?" There's perhaps no better way to celebrate National Umbrella Day than with your very own miniature!

3. Buy a backup
Let's face it — umbrellas break all the time. Plan ahead by using National Umbrella Day as an excuse to stock up on an extra

National Send A Card To a Friend Day

2/7/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plano likes to celebrate Send a card to a friend day!

February 7 is Send a Card to a Friend Day.

Stay Connected

While we all love our friends and would like to keep in touch with them all the time, daily life can sometimes make it hard to stay connected. If you are unable to keep up with the lives and times of your friends, then Send a Card to a Friend Day is the prefect excuse to take some time during the day to write a note to a dear friend to let them know you are thinking of them.

How to Celebrate?

  • Celebrating this holiday is very simple. Take some time out of your busy day and write notes to your friends.
  • Everyone loves a handwritten note, but if you can’t do that send them an e-card or even an email. No one will judge you as long as they hear from you.

Did You Know…

…that the earliest known greeting card is a Valentine’s Day card thought to have been sent sometime in the 1400s?

Why Do We Have National Caffeine Awareness Month?

2/7/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plano is a 24/7 365 days a year company we always celebrate National Caffeine Awareness month!

March is Caffeine Awareness Month, which comes at a time when caffeine from coffee, tea, energy drinks, chocolate bars, and other foods and beverages is an especially buzz-worthy topic for consumers around the world.

The 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs) recently published recommendations with caffeine mentioned a whopping 414 times.  And for the first time ever, an evidenced-based guideline was provided to the public, indicating that caffeine consumption of up to 400 mg/day, or approximately three to five 8-oz. cups of coffee per day, can be incorporated into healthful, daily eating patterns.

While the DGAs are primarily centered on coffee, there are several sources of caffeine that can contribute to this recommended 400 mg threshold.

Ever wonder which foods contain caffeine and how much is recommended for you?  Let’s take a quick look at a few common food and beverage sources and how much caffeine they contain:

  • An 8.4-oz. energy drink, a 20-oz. diet cola, and a shot of espresso, all undeniable sources of our glorious jolts, contain about the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee (80 mg).  Other recognizable choices include:
  • A cup of green tea or a 12-oz. can of soda, both of which contain about 40 mg of caffeine.
  • A 1.5-oz. chocolate bar, which contains about 10 mg of caffeine, whereas a darker chocolate bar the same size contains about 30 mg of caffeine.

So know your sources of caffeine and the amounts.  It all adds up across the day.

Tips to Remove Sewage Backup After Heavy Rains

2/7/2018 (Permalink)

Tips To Safely Remove Sewage Backup After Heavy Rains to your Property.

Sewer backup in Plano, TX following heavy rains is not uncommon. This can result in just a few inches of standing water or several feet of rain water accumulating.

Knowing how to remove this water safely and properly is important. You might also consider putting preventative measures in place to reduce the risk of this situation in the future.

Taking Preventative Measures

If you have experienced a sewer backup once, you know it is definitely something that you do not want to happen again. There are a few ways to reduce your risk:

• Install backwater valves on any basement plumbing fixtures
• On the house trap, ensure that all sewer trap plugs fit properly and tightly

Removing Sewage Backup

First and foremost, you want to shut off the electricity and gas in the space that was affected by the backup. Then, the most important part is to get all of the standing water out as quickly as possible. A sump or trash pump might be beneficial for this step in the process. Once removed, start by opening windows and doors and running fans to air out the space. Do not walk around with no shoes on your feet.

Any items touched by the backup or black water should be thrown away due to the risk of them being contaminated. Then, start cleaning. Use appropriate cleaning solutions, such as bleach and other disinfectants. Go over all surfaces multiple times, using clean sponges or cloths so that you can avoid cross-contaminating cleaned areas. Once clean, make sure to use another fresh towel to thoroughly dry the area. As you are doing this, be careful not to track sewage or other debris to already-cleaned areas.

It is important that sewer backup is promptly removed to avoid additional problems. Once it is gone and restoration is completed, consider instituting preventative measures to help to decrease the chances of your home experiencing this issue in the future.

Candle Burning Safety

2/7/2018 (Permalink)

Here are a 10 tips to keep your home safe while using candles.

  1. Young children should be taught to stay away from lit candles. Keep lit candles out of reach of children and pets. Candle lighting is not an appropriate activity for small children, so keep all matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children. Older children can learn to use them under adult supervision.
  2. Burn candles away from drafts, other heat sources, and all flammable objects or materials. In other words, never use candles near windows or exits.
  3. Keep burning candles away from curtains, wrapping paper, combustible decorations and displays, flammable liquids, and aerosol sprays, such as hair spray, which can explode. Never allow a candle flame to touch any glass surface. Don't burn candles more than four hours at a time.
  4. Unattended candles are an invitation to disaster; so don't forget to snuff out candles before leaving the room or going to bed. Blowing candles out doesn't do the trick: Extinguish them by wetting the wick. Here are some tips for burning candles safely:
  5. Candles other than jar candles must be used in an appropriate non-tipping, non-flammable holder. Make sure that candle containers and holders are made from tempered glass or have a proper glaze. All candles should be placed on a safe, heat-resistant dry surface. If possible, place glass chimneys or shades over them. For Christmas luminaires, use 15-hour votive candles in holders, placed in paper bags filled with at least 2 inches of sand. The candle must be of a size that will allow adequate space between the candles and bag so as not to ignite the bag.
  6. Remove labels and tags from candles before burning.
  7. Keep wicks trimmed to ¼ inch at all times. This inhibits smoking and carbon build-up at the tip of the wicks and provides a cleaner burn.
  8. Sometimes a layer of liquid wax forms that causes the wick to fall to the side. To maintain an even burn, keep the wick centered. This will also protect the candleholder, since a flame that's too close for too long may crack the holder.
  9. Keep the wax pool free of foreign objects such as wick trimmings and matches. They will interfere with proper burning and are flammable.
  10. Extinguish taper or pillar candles when they get within 2 inches of their holders. Discontinue use of containers candle when ½" of wax remains.                                  If you experience a smoke damage from a candle please call SERVPRO of Plano at 972-403-9004

Household Appliances Cause Most Water Damage

2/6/2018 (Permalink)

Many household appliances can fail and cause a major WATER DAMAGE to your home. When this happens to your property, please contact SERVPRO of Plano at 972-403-9004.

Steps to removing water and drying your home after a failed appliance causes a flood

Most flooding problems in homes come from the inside, rather than from a rising creek or river. In many of these cases, the problem results from a failed dishwasher or a split intake hose for a clothes washer.

Appliance flood damage in a Plano home sounds simple, but the truth is very different. A failure of either of these machines can drop over five gallons of water on the floor every hour. SERVPRO knows that if this happens in the morning after everyone leaves for work, that means an entire, three-bedroom room can be under an inch of water before the homeowner or renter walks in to find a disaster.

The only advantage to dealing with flooding from such an inside source is that it is clean water. There is no contamination to have to worry about, so there is no need for special protective gear and since cleaning the surfaces is not required, the overall time necessary for the job is far less as well.

The first step we take is to stop the flow of water. If a resident has not turned off the water main, we do it immediately after arriving on the property.

Next, we get to work removing standing water. For any amount over an inch, we start with commercial grade water pumps. These machines can empty out an average home in an afternoon, allowing us to bring in more equipment and inspect for damage to floors, carpets, and walls. If the power is out, we bring in our generators for uninterrupted electrical support.

If there is no permanent damage, we draw out remaining water trapped on carpets and floors. Technicians use extraction wands which are designed to bring out the water without harming wood surfaces or damaging the nap of the rug. This part of the job is more time-consuming and can take up to a full day or more.

With the water removed, we now lower the moisture levels in the surrounding air. To do so, we use dehumidifiers to draw moisture out of the air. Each device can remove over twenty gallons every day depending on the humidity and size of the dehumidifier we use. We perform this task to prevent the possibility of rot or mold growth in the walls and floors.

Drying out your home is not an easy process, but the right restoration company can do it quickly and safely. SERVPRO of Plano has decades of experience helping our neighbors put their homes back together after a flood. If you need our help, call today at (972)-403-9004.

Most Popular Dog Breeds

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

5 Of The Most Popular Dog Breeds In The World

There are plenty of obscure dog breeds out there, but some breeds just rise to the top more than others. These dog breeds are so popular that almost everyone in the world has heard of them, seen them, or lives with them. In fact, if you ask a stranger to picture a dog in their mind, chances are good it will be one of these breeds. The most popular dog breeds in the world can be found in dog shows, in homes, and even as hard workers in all kinds of fields. Here are the most popular dog breeds in the world and some of the reasons they’re so famous.

5. Beagle

You may remember the Beagle breed from the film Shiloh, or you may recognize the most famous Beagle ever, Snoopy, the dog from the Peanuts comic strip. If you take one look at a Beagle, it’s easy to see the appeal. They have adorable, puppy-dog eyes, floppy ears, and soft features. And they have a very friendly personality to match. But most of all, they have powerful noses. They’re scenthounds, which means they were bred to rely mostly on their sense of smell to hunt. They are still used for this purpose today.

In fact, all of these traits make them the perfect choice for working in airports around the world. They’re friendly and cute, so they don’t intimidate people, and they have great sniffers, which helps them detect contraband, even in a crowded airport. This began in 1984 when the U.S. Department of Agriculture started using Beagles to detect illegal food products being brought into Los Angeles International Airport. The Beagle was so successful that the “Beagle Brigade” still patrols 20 international airports and points of entry into the U.S. today!

4. Poodle

The Poodle held the title of most popular breed in the United States for almost 20 years. While they may seem prim and proper to those who have only seen the fancy-hairdo-wearing pups from dog shows, those familiar with Poodles know just how friendly and loyal they can be. And that fancy hairdo may be for show today, but it once served an important purpose. Poodles were originally bred to be waterfowl hunters. Their fur would be cut short in places to prevent being caught by underwater debris, but was left long around the joints and organs to protect the dog from cold water.

Their biggest asset is their intelligence. Circus performers recognized their talent for learning tricks, and their fur was perfect for styling into a visual spectacle for shows. These days, Poodles continue to dazzle audiences with their obedience and agility feats, which earn them high honors in many dog shows. Their friendly nature, intelligence, and “hypoallergenic” status makes them highly sought-after for interbreeding with other dogs, leading to the rise in popularity of breeds like the Goldendoodle.

3. German Shepherd

The German Shepherd owes his popularity, at least in part, to the dog who saved HollywoodRin Tin Tin. But the German Shepherd has kept his status as one of the ten most popular breeds in the United States with its ability to be trained to do just about anything. They work as assistants to the disabled, police dogs, military dogs, therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, contraband sniffing dogs, and herding dogs among other jobs.

German Shepherds are loyal, sometimes to a fault, and must be socialized early on to be friendly to other dogs and humans. But they make excellent guard dogs for this reason. They are naturally suspicious, so if an intruder breaks in to a German Shepherd’s home, he’s likely to have a hard time getting away without some teeth marks. The German Shepherd’s reputation as an intelligent, trainable dog with a strong sense of loyalty makes it a favorite as a worker dog and as a regular companion.

2. Bulldog

stock)The Bulldog may have one of the most unique looks in the world of dogs. Perhaps it is their easily recognized appearance that draws it such popularity. Or maybe it’s their friendly, albeit lazy demeanor. In fact, it’s this good nature that separates it so strongly from the ancestors they originate from. The Bulldog was bred in England from Mastiff dogs for the purpose of bull baiting, which was a bloody, vicious sport that involved the dog biting the nose of a bull and shaking it. Eventually the sport was outlawed, and the Bulldog lost its purpose as a working dog.

Rather than let the Bulldog fall by the wayside, patient breeders selected only the kindest, most pleasantly-tempered members of the breed to reproduce. So the Bulldog we have today has none of the vicious tendencies of its forefathers. Still, their unique body structure causes joint and respiratory problems. They tend to be overweight and lazy, they snore, they have excessive gas, and they’re sensitive to extreme temperatures. Even with all these problems, they are one of the most beloved and popular breeds in the world. Their looks may be both their biggest asset and their biggest downfall.

1. Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed in the United States. And if you’ve ever met a Labrador Retriever, it’s easy to see why. They’re incredibly friendly and loyal, great for families, and perfect companion dogs. In fact, they’ve been made famous by art, books, and movies, like Old Yellerand Marley & Me. But a good natured personality isn’t the Labrador Retriever’s only strength. They were bred to be working dogs. It won’t take you long to notice that Labrador Retrievers love the water. That’s because they originated in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, where they accompanied fisherman and helped with work on the ship. The loyal Labrador would haul in nets, fetch ropes, and catch fish that got off the hook.

Labradors may not be helping fishermen as much today, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t working dogs. Labrador Retrievers are employed as assistance dogs for the disabled, therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, and hunting companion dogs. Their intelligence and pleasant demeanor make them great at working with humans. The only job they’re not so talented at is being watchdogs. They’re too friendly, even to intruders. But their loving nature and adaptability make them the most popular dog breed in America.

How old is your Water Heater?

1/9/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage How old is your Water Heater? Water Heaters Age

The majority of WATER DAMAGE'S SERVPRO of Plano see's are due to broken WATER HEATERS.

If you have a gas water heater, you may have noticed a popping sound when the burner ignites. However, regardless of the fuel source, sediment build-up is a problem for both electric and gas water heaters.

Over time, the sediment build-up will break down the interior of the tank, and it may even clog the drain valve.

The older the water heater, the more likely it is to break down. As a general rule, a tank type water heater will last, on average 8 to 12 years.

With proper maintenance and a little luck, you may be able to nearly double the lifespan of your water heater. But sometimes even with the best care, a water heater will need to be replaced after only a few years. However, if your water heater is pushing the 10-year point, there’s a good chance it’s time to replace the unit.

If you have a Water Heater break and it does FLOOD you'r HOME or BUSINESS call SERVPRO of Plano: (972)-403-9004

Are You Storm Ready?

1/9/2018 (Permalink)

Each year Storms can hit all over the United States you must be STORM Ready.

Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, winddriven snow that lasts for several days.

Some winter storms are large enough to affect several states, while others affect only a single community.

Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

Here are some tips to stay warm:

 * Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing, wear mittens and a hat (preferably one that covers your ears).

* Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow.

* Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.

* Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS).

* Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing.

* Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.

*Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year.

*Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.

*Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.

* All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear. Cold-Related Emergencies

* Frostbite and hypothermia are two dangerous and potentially life-threatening emergencies. Learn how to care for these emergencies by taking a first aid class.

* Go to a designated public shelter if your home loses power or heat during periods of extreme cold.

* Avoid driving when conditions include sleet, freezing rain or drizzle, snow or dense fog. *

Before tackling strenuous tasks in cold temperatures, consider your physical condition, the weather factors and the nature of the task. * Protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in several layers. Stay indoors, if possible.

* Help people who require special assistance such as elderly people living alone, people with disabilities and children.

* Check on your animals and make sure that their access to food and water is not blocked by snow drifts, ice or other obstacles. If possible, bring them indoors. Caution: Carbon Monoxide Kills * Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. Locate unit away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors.

* The primary hazards to avoid when using alternate sources for electricity, heating or cooking are carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire.

* Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

* If the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door.

* Call for help from the fresh air location and remain there until emergency personnel arrive to assist you.

Understanding Mold

Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

How to Prevent Spontaneous Combustion of Oil Soaked Rags

12/22/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage How to Prevent Spontaneous Combustion of Oil Soaked Rags Garage fire from DIY project

Rags are the most common type of Spontaneous Combustion fires.

These fires are caused by improperly disposed of oil and stain soaked rags. Examples of these products are oil-based paints and stains, teak and linseed oils, varnishes and polyurethane, paint thinners, etc.

Spontaneous combustion of oily rags occurs when rag or cloth is slowly heated to its ignition point through oxidation. A substance will begin to release heat as it oxidizes. If this heat has no way to escape, like in a pile, the temperature will raise to a level high enough to ignite the oil and ignite the rag or cloth. The fire from this can spread quickly to other combustibles and cause great damage to your home or property.

Prevention of spontaneous combustion fires begins with good housekeeping. A clean work area can prevent a fire from spreading and getting bigger by not allowing the fire fuel to burn. Also understanding the potential for self-heating of rags soiled with oils such as linseed oil and turpentine is a key step in eliminating these preventable fires. To properly and safely dispose of oily rags, Bend Fire Department recommends the following steps:

Use a container with a tight fitting lid. A metal can is preferable but a plastic can or zip lock bag can work if nothing else is available.

Place soiled and used rags inside and then fill the rest the way with water, seal the top and do not open it. This will prevent the oils from oxidizing, and thus keeping the rags from heating up and igniting. Contact your local garbage disposal company for their policy on disposal of the can and contents. Some companies will permit disposal in regular household trash.

Please consider the correct way to dispose of oil soaked rags.

Being Prepared for Tsunamis

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

BE PREPARED:

Coastal States

Tsunamis Why take the risk?

Did you know tsunamis can hit any U.S. coast? While they are more likely to hit states on the Pacific coastline or in the Caribbean, it is good to know what to do if a tsunami does strike where you live, or even where you may vacation. Ready.gov says “tsunamis, also known as seismic sea waves (mistakenly called “tidal waves”), are a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance such as an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or meteorite.” Areas within a mile of the coast and less than 25 feet above sea level have a greater risk of being hit. As with any emergency, be sure you have a plan.

Know the evacuation plan and move inland or to higher ground and avoid the beach. “The first wave may not be the last or the largest,” according to the National Weather Service. For more information on preparing for a tsunami, visit ready.gov/tsunamis.

Fire Damage Kitchen Caution Stay Safe This Holiday Season Kitchen stove fire

Each holiday season, families gather to celebrate  by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don’t practice safe cooking habits, your holiday could become hazardous very quickly. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries. The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. It’s important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.  Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.  Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.  If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.  Keep anything that can catch fire—oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains—away from the stovetop. If you have a cooking fire, consider the following safety protocols to help keep you and your family safe.  Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. n Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave. n For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.  If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out.  Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. Call SERVPRO of Plano for your no obligation estimate.

In homes, smoke alarms should be in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level, including the basement. Extra smoke alarms may be needed in larger homes. Test the smoke alarms monthly using the test button.  Smoke alarms with non replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every ten years. *Place Christmas trees, candles and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, and heat vents.

Cleaning Do You Have Dirty Ducts? Dirty HVAC

Did you know your ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality? In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminates such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

A routine part of SERVPRO of Plano’s service is inspecting the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Condition Unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC and duct work clean can potentially extend the life-span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may help save you money. Duct cleaning may not always be necessary.

In some circumstances such as after a FIRE, SMOKE, or Suspected MOLD GROWTH, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the clean up process. In these cases, SERVPRO of Plano can often restore the HVAC system and duct work to pre-damage condition.

Water Damage F.A.Q.

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

  • Should I file an Insurance Claim?
    • Maybe, it all depends on your deductible and what our services are going to cost. We recommend having your deductible information on hand and reaching out to your local insurance agent to discuss your policy. We can give you an estimate before beginning work to help you make the right decision on whether or not your loss is claim worthy. If you do file an insurance claim SERVPRO is on vendor lists for a wide variety of insurance companies and works directly with them to make it easier for you.
  • What can I do before you get here?
    • A few things we recommend; try and pick up small belongings off the floor, if you’re dealing with carpet you can place pieces of tin foil under the legs of your furniture to prevent furniture staining, also it is crucial that you make sure the water is turned off or the leak is repaired before we arrive onsite.
  • What are some safety concerns I should be aware of?
    • Water damages can definitely be dangerous in your home if the right steps aren’t taken. If water came from above we suggest you do not use lighting fixtures or ceiling fans until the loss has been assessed and there are no structural support concerns. Do not plug anything into outlets that may have been submerged in water on the floor or low on a wall. If dealing with flood waters or sewage losses try not to walk in the water it could pose serious health risks.
  • What will you do when you get here?
    • First we will assess the loss area to confirm the cause of loss and see where the water has traveled using moisture meters and sensors. Next we might preform extraction on standing water where we could move and protect furniture and remove area rugs from the loss area. Then there is the potential for demolition services such as; lifting or removing carpet and pad, removing damaged or swollen baseboards, removing drywall and insulation, or removing other non-salvageable flooring materials. Finally we will setup drying equipment, air movers and dehumidifiers, to create a balanced drying environment; this equipment usually runs for 3-5 days for residences and 5-10 days for commercial properties.
  • How much will your services cost?
    • It all depends on what we find when we assess the loss site. We cannot accurately give an estimate without seeing the damage. We do preform free estimates Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. If needing an estimate on the weekend or not in that time frame the cost is $175. Our services could range from a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars depending on the size of damage and materials affected.

Turkey Fryer Tips from SERVPRO of Plano

General Turkey Fryer Tips from SERVPRO of Plano Turkey fryer explosion

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, I’m sure most of you have already started planning and prepping for the big feast. Every Thanksgiving meal revolves around the turkey and there are numerous tried-and- true recipes out there, but if I had my pick a juicy fried turkey is where it’s at.

Here are some tips so your Thanksgiving festivities don’t end disastrous:

  1. Keep outdoor fryers off decks, out of garages, and a safe distance away from trees and other structures.
  2. Make sure the turkey is fully thawed and dry before cooking. Water that mixes into the hot oil can cause flare-ups.
  3. Never operate a fryer outdoors in the rain or snow.
  4. Place the fryer on a level surface and avoid moving it once it's in use.
  5. Leave two feet between the tank and the burner when using a propane-powered fryer.
  6. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid overfilling. Oil can ignite when it makes contact with the burner.
  7. Choose a smaller turkey for frying. A bird that's 8 to 10 pounds is best; pass on turkeys over 12 pounds.
  8. Never leave fryers unattended.
  9. Purchase a fryer with temperature controls, and watch the oil temperature carefully. Cooking oil that is heated beyond its smoke point can catch fire. If you notice the oil is smoking, turn the fryer off.
  10. Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once the turkey is submerged, turn the burner on.
  11. Wear goggles to shield your eyes, use oven mitts to protect your hands and arms, and keep a grease-rated fire extinguisher close by.
  12. Skip the stuffing when frying turkey, and avoid water-based marinades.
  13. Keep children and pets away from the fryer at all times.
  14. Once finished, carefully remove the pot from the burner; place it on a level surface and cover to let the oil cool overnight before disposing.
  15. Do not pour oil down the sink drain or disposal.
  16. Opt for an oil-less fryer. This uses infrared heat, rather than oil, to cook the turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
